The effectiveness of a health education program on blood pressure control for hypertensive patients attending Saraburi Hospital
Abstract:
This study was quasi-experimental research which studied the effectiveness of
a health education program on blood pressure control in hypertensive patients at
Saraburi Hospital, by applying the concepts of Protection Motivation Theory and group
process. The sample for this study was 70 patients with essential hypertension, who
received clinical treatment from the Cardiovascular Disease Clinic of Saraburi Hospital.
They were divided into experimental and comparison groups, with an equal number, of
35 persons, in each. The experimental group received a newly designed health education
program for 12 weeks, while the comparison group received a regular health education
program. Data collection was done by interview technique, with a structured interview
schedule, and medical records, before and after the experiment. Percentage, mean,
standard deviation, chi-square, paired t-test, and Independent t-test were used for data
analysis.
Results showed that after participating in the health education program,
the experimental group had a more significant change in perceived severity and
vulnerability of hypertension complications, self-efficacy expectations, response
efficacy of practicing hypertension control behaviors, and health practices
regarding dietary control. Exercise, relaxation, avoiding risk factors, medicine
taking, and blood pressure levels were all also changed from before the experiment
and compared with the comparison group. There was no significant change in
Body Mass Index but the BMI of the experimental group decreased more than that
of the comparison group.
Regarding the findings, the health education program applying Protection
Motivation Theory and group process had positively changed blood pressure control
behaviors of hypertensive patients. Thus, this program should be organized for
hypertensive patients and other chronic disease patients
