Abstract:
Fibers that consist of chitosan (CS) and methylcellulose (MC) were prepared from wet-spinningtechnique by dissolving methylcellulose and chitosan in water and aqueous acetic acid solution,respectively. Afterwards, mixed solution was injected into sodium hydroxide/sodium acetatesolution for desired fiber. The fibers were characterized for their physical properties, chemicalproperties, mechanical properties, consistency of fiber, degradation ability and biocompatibility.CSIMC fibers were translucent fibers with 0.1 1 to 0.18 mm. diameter. The result from FT-IRshowed functional groups of'mixed CSIMC did not change. In all cases, pH of water ,used to soak,the prepared fibers was about 7. the addition of methylcellulose to chitosan was found to decreasetensile strength and increase elongation. At room temperature for 6 weeks, the fibers wereconsistent in physical properties. Fiber degradation in physiological buffer solution decreased withincreasing MC content . Irritation tested with rabbits was not observed. In this study, each case wassuitable for each application.
