The application of particle-induced prompt photon emission spectrometry for chemical analysis - the determination of minor and trace components in steels
Abstract:
The intentional inclusion of minor and trace components as alloying components in
the production of steel changes the characteristics of the metal. In this study, alpha and proton
particles of up to 5 MeV, generated by a Van Der Graaff accelerator, excite the elements in a
steel matrix in order to determine trace, minor and major components of the samples. The
main advantage of the method is that it is rapid and does not destroy the sample. The
techniques have the added benefit of measuring the concentration of a range of elements
simultaneously. A description is given of the spectrometry of X-rays from steels under
bombardment with protons and measured with a Si(Li) detector. This was compared with
gamma-ray spectrometry of the steels excited by protons and alpha particles and measured by
a Ge(Li) detector. The determinations of N, Si, V, Cr, Mn, Mo and W in Standard Reference
steels were measured with respect to precision for both the X-ray and gamma-ray techniques.
The concentration of elements in most steel samples ranged from 0.0120%. For these, the
precision of analysis ranged from 8% to less that 1% respectively.
