Abstract:
This research aims to explore the influence of distance factor and other variables on international trade in services in digital economy era which the development of new technology and innovation has been highlighted. To find out, this study employs the Gravity Model, using Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) to analyze secondary panel dataset for both total international trade in services and other top 6 of sub-categories between Thailand and its 37 of OECD trading partners from 2005 2019. These 6 subcategories are (1) Travel (2) Transport (3) Charges for the Use of Intellectual Property (4) Construction (5) Financial Services and (6) Telecommunications, Computer and Information Services. The result shows, statistical significance, that distance factor does not only negatively impact international trade in services both total international trade in services and other 3 international trade in services sub-categories; which are travel, charges for use of intellectual property and telecommunications, computer, and information services, but also the distance variable acts as a positive factor that influences international trade in financial services. Additionally, GDP and foreign exchange rate positively impact total international trade in services and all its sub-categories. Different official language factor imposes negative impact on international transport, charges for use of intellectual property and construction. For regional trade agreement factor, it is found that there is a positive influence on total international trade in services and other 5 international trade in services sub-categories except telecommunications, computer and information services which is significantly negative. Lastly, the ICT Development Index (IDI) positively impacts on total international trade in services and other 4 international trade in services sub-categories including travel, charges for use of intellectual property, financial services and telecommunications, computer, and information services.
