Abstract:
This research paper contained 2 objectives; 1) study the contents and teachings found in Aṭṭhasatasutta, and 2) study of insight practice in Aṭṭhasatasutta. It was documentary research, the received data was collected from Theravada Buddhism and other related documents, compiled, and presented in descriptive types.
The results revealed that Aṭṭhasatasutta was a discourse concerning the teachings of 108 types of Vedanā or feeling classified into (1) 2 modes of feeling; bodily feeling and mental feeling, (2) 3 feelings; happiness, unhappiness, and indifference, (3) 5 feelings; happy faculty, unhappy faculty, mental happiness, sorrow faculty, neutral faculty, (4) 6 feelings; eye contact feeling, etc. (5) 18 feelings; 6 mental happiness-arisen feeling, mental unhappiness-arisen feeling, neutral-arisen feelings, (6) 36 feelings; (1) 6 house-arisen mental feelings, (2) 6 homeless-arisen mental happiness, (3) 6 household-arisen unhappy feeling, (4) 6 renounce-arisen unhappiness, (5) 6 household-arisen neutrality, (6) 6 renounce-arisen neutrality, (7) 108 feeling; (1) 36 past feelings, (2) 36 future feelings, (3) present feelings.
An analysis of insight practice in Atthasatasutta was found that insight practitioner starts from directly observing the mentioned feelings, i.e., 2 types of feelings, 3 feelings, 5 feelings, 6 feelings, 18 feelings, 36 feelings, 108 feelings including 36 past feelings, 36 present feelings, and 36 future feelings which are happening in every present moment falling into rise and falls continuously, his mind will be persistent to all 108 types of feelings, i.e., 1) arising feelings, 2) murder-like feelings, 3) arms retreat-like feeling, and he would realize such feeling with mindfulness which later enters to the path of insight knowledge.
